Alex Murdaugh Condemns Hulu True-Crime Series as “Misleading” Depiction of Family Tragedy

Former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh has voiced strong objections to the eight-part limited series Murdaugh: Death in the Family, now streaming on Hulu. Murdaugh, convicted for the murders of his wife and son and currently serving life sentences, argues that the dramatised retelling mischaracterises his relationships with his late wife and son and omits his perspective entirely.

Mischaracterised Family Portrayal

In a statement issued through his legal team, Murdaugh described the series’ depiction of his family as deeply troubling and inaccurate. He claimed the show features “numerous inaccuracies and misleading portrayals that distort the truth of their lives,” specifically calling out the misrepresentation of his bonds with his wife Maggie and their son Paul.
He further said the production failed to reach out to his family or attorneys for input, instead relying on “secondary sources with no direct knowledge or relationship” to craft the narrative.

Dramatisation vs. Ongoing Legal Fallout

The series dramatizes the shocking June 2021 murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh at the family’s expansive Lowcountry estate, a case that catalysed revelations of long-standing financial misconduct, addiction, and power.
Though the show is rooted in fact, analysts note that it blends real events with creative licence, compressing timelines, fictionalising certain interactions, and emphasising dramatic storytelling over strict historical accuracy.
With criminal appeals still in motion for Murdaugh, his team warns viewers to treat the series more as entertainment than an accurate documentary of events.
