The FBI is investigating an apparent cybersecurity incident involving its official recruitment website after a hacking group claimed it gained access to sensitive information connected to FBI employees and job applicants. The bureau said the source of the suspected breach has not yet been established and that investigators are working with outside technology providers supporting the website.
FBI Jobs Website Taken Offline During Investigation
The FBI confirmed Wednesday that it was aware of claims involving unauthorized activity on FBIJobs.gov, the website used by people seeking information about careers and employment opportunities with the bureau.
The website was unavailable as the investigation continued. The FBI said it was examining whether the incident originated within its own systems or through a third-party provider responsible for supporting the recruitment platform.
The bureau also said it was working with those providers to identify the source of the activity and reduce any potential risks associated with the incident.
ShinyHunters Claims Access to Sensitive Information
A hacking group known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the alleged intrusion. In an online message, the group said it had obtained highly sensitive information involving FBI agents and people who had applied for jobs with the agency.
The hackers claimed that information belonging to thousands of people could have been exposed. Reports about the alleged breach also indicated that the group shared samples of data it said came from FBI personnel, although the authenticity and full scope of the material had not been independently established.
The FBI has not confirmed the hackers’ claims about the amount or type of information accessed. The bureau’s investigation is still focused on determining whether a breach occurred, how any unauthorized access may have happened and what information may have been affected.
Hackers Link Incident to Earlier FBI Warning
ShinyHunters said its alleged attack was connected to an FBI public advisory issued in May. That advisory identified the group as a cybercriminal organization involved in large-scale data breaches and extortion and warned that its claims about stolen information could sometimes be exaggerated or false.
The hacking group objected to those descriptions and demanded that the FBI withdraw or change the statements. It said it was giving the bureau a limited period to respond and characterized the incident as retaliation rather than a financially motivated attack.
The latest incident comes after other cybersecurity concerns involving the FBI. In March, the bureau disclosed that it was investigating suspicious activity involving an internal system containing sensitive information related to surveillance operations and investigations. Around the same time, another hacking group claimed to have accessed an account associated with FBI Director Kash Patel and released older personal material online.
For now, the FBI has not confirmed the hackers’ allegations regarding the recruitment website. The investigation is expected to determine whether personal information was actually accessed and, if so, how extensive the exposure may be.
