Five Wounded in Early-Morning Virginia State University Shooting
Five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University early Saturday morning, August 15, as students prepared for the beginning of the new academic year. The incident occurred near the university’s Quad Annexes, an area that includes student residence halls.
Chesterfield County police responding to the scene found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside the dormitories. All five victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One person was initially reported to have life-threatening injuries and was later described as being in critical condition, while the other four suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. At least one of the victims was identified as a Virginia State University student.
Campus Lockdown Lifted as Police Search for Suspects
Virginia State University officials said the shooting involved multiple suspects. A lockdown was imposed following the incident while police secured the area and began searching for those responsible.
The lockdown was later lifted, although a significant law enforcement presence remained on campus as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened. Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities have not publicly identified the suspects or announced any arrests. The motive behind the shooting also remains unclear as investigators continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
Shooting Comes Just Before Fall Semester
The shooting happened at a particularly significant time for Virginia State University, with the fall semester scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17. Students had recently returned to campus, with many participating in orientation activities ahead of classes.
Virginia State University is a historically Black university located in Ettrick, roughly 20 miles south of Richmond. The incident has cast a somber mood over the campus just days before the start of the new academic term. University officials have urged members of the campus community to follow law enforcement instructions while the investigation continues.
