Shooting Erupts Near Virginia State University Residence Halls

Five people were wounded in a shooting at Virginia State University early Saturday morning, August 15, after multiple suspects were reportedly involved in the incident.

Police responded to the area of the university’s Quad Annexes shortly after 1:20 a.m. and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus residence halls. All five victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One victim was in critical condition, while the other four suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. At least one of those injured was identified as a Virginia State University student.

The shooting prompted officials to place the Virginia State University campus under lockdown while officers searched the area and worked to determine what happened.

Campus Lockdown Lifted as Investigation Continues

The lockdown was later lifted, although a substantial law enforcement presence remained on campus as investigators continued examining the shooting scene.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspects or announced any arrests. The motive behind the shooting also remains unclear.

University officials have asked people with information about the incident to contact law enforcement. Police have also urged members of the campus community to remain aware of the ongoing investigation and follow official safety instructions.

Shooting Comes Just Before Fall Semester

The Virginia State University shooting occurred just days before the beginning of the fall 2026 semester. Classes were scheduled to resume Monday, August 17, with students already returning to campus and staying in university housing.

Virginia State University is a historically Black university in Ettrick, Virginia, roughly 20 miles south of Richmond. The incident has cast a shadow over the start of the new academic year as police continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the early-morning gunfire.

Officials have said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
