Elderly Man With Dementia Killed in Dog Attack at Daughter’s Home
A Vermont woman has been charged following the death of her 78-year-old father, who suffered from dementia and was fatally attacked by a pit bull at a family residence in Essex.
Authorities say the victim, Stephen Campbell, had been staying with his daughter while battling dementia. The fatal incident occurred in March when the family’s 117-pound, two-year-old pit bull allegedly mauled the elderly man inside the home.
The woman, 43-year-old Janna Campbell, entered a not guilty plea after being charged with voluntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment.
Previous Dog Attacks Under Investigation
According to investigators, the pit bull involved in the fatal attack had reportedly been connected to two earlier incidents involving other people. Prosecutors allege that the dog owner failed to properly control the animal despite concerns over its behavior.
Officials believe the attack could have been prevented and say the charges stem from allegations that adequate precautions were not taken.
Court Proceedings Continue
Campbell appeared in court this week, where she denied the allegations. The case is expected to move forward as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the deadly attack.
The tragic incident has renewed discussions about responsible pet ownership and safety measures for households with vulnerable family members, particularly seniors requiring constant care.
