Delcy Rodríguez Overhauls Venezuela’s Military Leadership, Replaces Top Commanders

Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez has initiated a sweeping overhaul of the country’s military leadership, replacing senior commanders in a decisive move aimed at consolidating control. The shake-up comes amid ongoing political transition and heightened pressure following major national and international developments.

Major Military Shake-Up After Defence Leadership Change

The restructuring follows Rodríguez’s recent decision to remove long-serving Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López, a key figure from the previous administration who had held the role for over a decade.

Shortly after appointing a new defence chief, Rodríguez moved further by replacing the entire senior military command. The changes affect top positions across Venezuela’s armed forces, signaling a broad reset of leadership within the institution.

New Leadership Reflects Consolidation of Power

The newly appointed defence minister, Gustavo González López, a former intelligence and security official, is considered a close ally of Rodríguez. His elevation reflects a shift toward a leadership circle built on loyalty and strategic alignment.

Additional changes include new commanders across key military branches, such as the army, navy, air force, and national guard. Analysts view the restructuring as an effort to strengthen internal control and rebuild confidence within the armed forces after recent instability.

Political Context and Strategic Implications

The military overhaul comes in the wake of major political upheaval, including the removal of former president Nicolás Maduro earlier in 2026. The armed forces, long seen as a pillar of political power in Venezuela, are now undergoing rapid transformation under Rodríguez’s leadership.

Experts suggest the move is designed to eliminate lingering influence from previous leadership while reinforcing authority during a sensitive transition period. However, critics warn that replacing top commanders with loyalists may raise concerns about governance, transparency, and human rights.
