Virginia Man’s Murder Trial Begins in Alleged Double Homicide Linked to Affair with Au Pair DGEV5U2F2VGQ7JDODYIA3J3ZLA

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A man accused of killing his wife and another man in a high-profile double homicide nearly three years ago is set to face a jury this week in northern Virginia. Prosecutors say the gruesome deaths stemmed from a secret romantic relationship with the family’s live-in au pair and a scheme to lure an unsuspecting man into the couple’s home. Brendan Banfield, 39, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and faces additional charges connected to the case.

Alleged Plot Behind Fatal February 2023 Killings

Authorities allege that Banfield and Brazilian au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair, orchestrated a plan to draw Joseph Ryan to the Banfield home in Herndon, Va. Prosecutors contend the pair used a fake social media profile in the name of Banfield’s wife, Christine Banfield, to arrange a meeting with Ryan that involved a sexual fetish theme and a knife.

When Ryan arrived at the home on Feb. 24, 2023, both the wife and Ryan were killed. Initially, Banfield and Magalhães told police they believed Ryan had entered the residence and stabbed Christine before they shot him in self-defense. Investigators now say the story was staged to cover up the alleged plot.

Guilty Plea and Conflicting Evidence

Magalhães previously pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter after reaching a plea agreement last year. Her statement to authorities has been central to the prosecution’s theory. However, not all forensic experts involved in the investigation agree with the narrative that Banfield and Magalhães lured Ryan online — a former digital forensics examiner testified that Christine Banfield may have contacted Ryan independently.

Charges, Defense Arguments and Trial Outlook

In addition to aggravated murder and firearm charges, Banfield also faces counts of child abuse and felony child cruelty because his young daughter was inside the home during the killings. His defense team has challenged key elements of the prosecution’s case, arguing that the investigation is rooted in a theory rather than firm facts.

The trial is expected to draw significant attention as it unfolds in Fairfax County Circuit Court, where jurors will weigh the prosecution’s version of events against competing evidence raised by the defense.
