Tennessee College Professor Found Fatally Shot on Highway — Loaded Gun Nearby as Armed Man Waited at Scene Dr. AM InMem

A faculty member at a Tennessee university was found dead along a rural highway early on Dec. 4, her body bearing multiple gunshot wounds and a loaded personal firearm lying beside her. A 27-year-old man, whose connection to the victim is unclear, was present at the scene with his own gun — now cooperating with law-enforcement as investigators from the state bureau and local sheriff’s office probe what happened.

Victim Identified as Veteran Sociology Professor

Authorities confirmed the deceased as 41-year-old Ashleigh McKinzie, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). Deputies responded to a call on Smithville Highway near Captain’s Point Road just after midnight Thursday and found her lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. A loaded and cocked handgun — later identified as hers — was discovered next to her body.

McKinzie had been part of the MTSU faculty since 2017 and was known for teaching courses on sensitive social topics, including domestic violence and sexual assault — earning high praise from students for her compassionate, engaging teaching style. Her sudden, violent death has stunned the university community and beyond.

Armed Man Found Nearby — Investigation Underway

Also at the scene was 27-year-old Todd Stanton, found waiting for deputies with a handgun resting on the hood of his pickup truck. Authorities say he is cooperating with investigators; however, as of now, no arrests have been made, and the nature of his relationship with McKinzie remains unclear.

Officials from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the local sheriff’s office have launched a full-scale inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They have not yet released details about how many times she was shot or what may have motivated the attack, urging anyone with information to come forward.

Shock and Mourning at MTSU Community

Students and colleagues are reeling over the loss of a professor who handled difficult subjects with empathy and clarity. One former student recalled McKinzie’s words during their final class together — a message about trusting one’s intuition — now hauntingly poignant in light of her tragic death. Many say her dedication to advocacy and education made her a rare and inspiring presence on campus.

MTSU’s sociology department issued a statement expressing sorrow and offering support to those affected by the tragedy, reminding students and staff that counseling services remain available.
