Man Shot in Escondido After Knife-Wielding Run-In With Police

On November 26, 2025, law enforcement in Escondido, California, confronted a man who was acting erratically and brandishing a knife on a busy street. The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Juan Ramos, reportedly ignored repeated orders to drop the weapon and moved into oncoming traffic — prompting a swift police response.

Officers Open Fire After Suspect Charges — He Tries to Escape Despite Grave Wounds

When officers ordered Ramos to disarm, he allegedly advanced toward a detective with the knife still in hand. Police responded with gunfire and struck him multiple times.

Even after being shot, the man made a startling attempt to flee. He rose from the ground and ran toward officers — who opened fire again. Observers described the scene as surreal, noting that Ramos kept getting up between shots before finally collapsing.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and is expected to survive. Officials say he now faces charges of assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon.

Investigation Underway, Authorities Seek Witness Input

The shooting prompted a full investigation by the homicide unit of the local police. As per protocol, the case will also be reviewed by prosecutors, with oversight from federal authorities. Other officers at the scene — some wearing body cameras — remain under review.

Authorities are urging any eyewitnesses to come forward and provide information to assist ongoing inquiries.
