Yonkers Assault Shocks Community During Holiday Visit
A Yonkers, New York woman is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say she violently confronted and allegedly assaulted a pregnant Department of Social Services worker on Christmas Eve. The incident, which occurred during an attempt to comply with a court order, resulted in the suspect’s arrest and a pending court appearance scheduled for early January.
Allegations Detail Violent Encounter With Social Services Employee
According to law enforcement, 30-year-old Melissa Cochrane became combative while interacting with child welfare staff at the Westchester County Department of Social Services on December 24. Prosecutors allege that she confronted the pregnant worker during the visit, then grabbed her by the neck and chest area and forced her to the ground before police were called to the scene.
Officials say the confrontation unfolded as case workers were attempting to enforce a court directive. Once tensions escalated, Cochrane’s alleged actions led to her immediate arrest.
Multiple Charges and Legal Proceedings Underway
Cochrane has been formally charged with several offenses, including:
- Three counts of second-degree assault
- One count of third-degree assault
- One count of endangering the welfare of a child
She was released on her own recognizance after her arraignment but is expected to return to court on January 8 for the next phase of the case.
