Two young children were fatally injured in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 in Lebec, Northern Los Angeles County, California, on Christmas Day — prompting law enforcement to detain the driver on suspicion of felony child endangerment. The heartbreaking incident occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time on Dec. 25, when one vehicle failed to maintain control and struck another that was stopped on the freeway.
📍 Crash Details and Arrest Made
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a blue SUV carrying eight occupants, including six minors, collided with the rear of a stationary vehicle on Interstate 5 near Lebec. The impact ejected three of the children from the SUV, and despite immediate lifesaving efforts by first responders, two of the young passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV’s driver, identified by CHP as Jorge Preciado, was taken into custody at the site of the crash on suspicion of felony child endangerment. Preciado was subsequently booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station in Santa Clarita. Authorities have not publicly released the names or ages of the victims as investigations continue.
🌧️ Severe Weather a Factor in Holiday Driving Risks
The fatal collision occurred amid significant storm conditions that affected much of Southern California in the days leading up to Christmas. Heavy rainfall — in some areas exceeding 11 inches — was reported across parts of Los Angeles County, leading to flooded roadways and hazardous travel conditions. Officials had issued warnings about potential flash flooding and dangerous driving situations ahead of the holiday.
CHP representatives emphasized the crucial role of safety restraints and child safety seats in protecting young passengers on the road, especially during severe weather events.
