In a devastating overnight assault, Russian forces unleashed a combination of hundreds of drones and missiles against the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, resulting in four confirmed deaths and at least 27 people wounded, Ukrainian officials say. Fire ripped through multiple districts and infrastructure sites were hit, raising fears of power and water disruptions across the city.
Unrelenting Assault: Drones, Missiles, and Civilian Impact
According to Ukraine’s military administration chief, the barrage targeted Kyiv early Friday with drone and missile waves that pierced the capital’s defences. Some 430 drones and 18 missiles were reportedly launched nationwide, concentrated on the capital and its surrounding regions. Officials say the attack ignited fires, sent debris falling in residential neighborhoods, and struck sites such as hospitals, homes and educational facilities across districts including Darnytskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Desnianskyi and Solomianskyi.
In one neighborhood, falling fragments set a vehicle ablaze; in another, debris damaged three apartment buildings and private residences.
One of the casualties is a pregnant woman, and at least one man remains in critical condition, city authorities report.
Energy Infrastructure Under Threat, City Warned of Outages
The assault didn’t only strike homes. Key power-grid and utility facilities in and around Kyiv were also hit, prompting warnings of possible interruptions to electricity and water services. With many energy sites already stressed, the latest escalation forced early outage measures and heightened emergency responses.
Ukraine’s president condemned the strike as a “calculated attack” aimed at civilian populations and their living essentials.
International Ramifications & Kyiv’s Defensive Response
The scale of the assault underscores Russia’s intensifying strategy of targeting not only military objectives but also civilian infrastructure, particularly energy and utility systems. Kyiv appealed for enhanced air-defence support and for its allies to increase pressure on Moscow through sanctions and strategic aid.
Despite the severity, Ukraine’s air-defence systems intercepted a substantial number of incoming threats, yet the remaining impact has left damaged buildings, wounded civilians, and a shaken capital.
