Protesters Smash Custard and Crumble on Crown Jewels Case at London’s Historic Tower

Protesters Smash Custard and Crumble on Crown Jewels Case at London’s Historic Tower skynews state crown crown jewels 7102492

In a bold protest at London’s historic Tower of London, four members of the activist group Take Back Power were arrested after defacing the display case of the Imperial State Crown. The protesters used apple crumble and yellow custard — staples of British desserts — to smear the glass case housing the iconic crown, demanding drastic economic reforms. While the priceless jewels remained intact, the incident shocked tourists and led to a temporary closure of the exhibit.

Custard and Crumble: Protest Aims at Royal Symbol

The demonstration unfolded when two individuals from the group reportedly dumped a tray of apple crumble onto the glass cabinet protecting the Imperial State Crown, then poured custard over it. According to uploaded protest videos, the act was meant as a symbolic condemnation — their banner read: “Democracy has crumbled. Tax the rich.” As stunned visitors watched, staff quickly intervened and alerted police.

The crown itself, studded with thousands of precious stones and historically worn by royal monarchs including King Charles III, was not harmed — thanks to the protective glass and swift action by security staff.

Arrests, Temporary Closure, and the Protesters’ Demands

Officials from the Metropolitan Police confirmed the four individuals were detained on suspicion of criminal damage. The exhibit housing the Crown Jewels — a major tourist draw — was closed for investigation before reopening later the same day.

The activists belong to Take Back Power, a civil-resistance group pushing for structural change: they demand a permanent citizens’ assembly, wealth taxes, and sweeping reforms to address socioeconomic inequality — framing the stunt as a protest against rigged systems and the concentration of wealth.

Historic Site, Modern Message: Why It Matters

The Tower of London — once a royal palace and prison for historic figures — now stands as a symbol of Britain’s monarchy and heritage. By targeting the display of the Imperial State Crown, protesters aimed to juxtapose that symbolism with what they describe as a failing “democratic” system. The incident underscores growing tensions over inequality, wealth distribution, and calls for reform.
