Tragic Shooting During Holiday Target Practice

An Oklahoma man is facing serious criminal charges after a stray bullet from his backyard target practice on Christmas Day fatally struck a woman sitting with her family several blocks away, authorities said. The fatal incident has led to a manslaughter charge and renewed calls for responsible firearm use.

Woman Hit by Stray Round While with Family

The victim was seated under a covered porch holding a child when multiple gunshots were heard nearby, according to investigators. She reportedly made a remark about someone having a new firearm moments before being struck, suffering a wound to her right arm before the bullet penetrated her chest cavity. Emergency responders were already performing CPR upon arrival, but the woman was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Suspect Confesses to Target Practice; Charged With Manslaughter

Law enforcement identified 33-year-old Cody Wayne Adams as the shooter. Deputies assert Adams had been firing rounds at a makeshift target in his backyard after recently purchasing a Glock .45 caliber handgun. During interviews, he acknowledged shooting toward the direction of the deceased woman’s home and expressed visible remorse when confronted by investigators. He has been formally charged with first-degree manslaughter and is currently out on a $100,000 bond under conditions that restrict contact with the victim’s family. His arraignment is scheduled for early 2026.

Safety and Legal Implications Highlighted

The tragic event has underscored concerns regarding safe firearm handling and the importance of secure backstops when discharging weapons on private property. Law enforcement officials noted there was no adequate barrier to prevent bullets from traveling beyond the suspect’s yard. The case also contributes to broader statistics on firearm-related fatalities, with accidental shootings remaining a significant public safety issue.
