Atlanta Jail Break Leads to Shocking Interstate Kidnapping

Three inmates who broke out of the DeKalb County Jail near Atlanta sparked a multi-state law enforcement response after allegedly kidnapping a Lyft driver to ferry them toward Florida during their attempted escape. The troubling sequence of events has shed light on jail security gaps and prompted federal charges including kidnapping and escape.

Daring Escape and Ride-Share Abduction

Officials say the men — identified as 24-year-old Stevenson Charles, 31-year-old Yusuf Minor and 25-year-old Naod Yohannes — managed to exploit a weaker part of the aging DeKalb County Jail late Sunday, slipping past security unnoticed until a routine check discovered the breach.

Once free, they allegedly arranged a ride-share pick-up through Minor’s girlfriend using a fake name. When the Lyft driver arrived, court documents indicate the trio forced their way into her vehicle, wrapping a rope around her neck and compelling her to drive.

Ten-Hour Ordeal Across States

According to federal affidavits, the driver was held for up to 10 hours as the escapees traveled south toward Florida. During the journey, the inmates reportedly threatened her with violence to maintain control, and used her financial information to rent a property in Miramar, a suburb of Miami.

Law enforcement used advanced license plate readers to follow the vehicle’s movements. The Fabian-like pursuit culminated in Florida, where authorities arrested all three men. The Lyft driver was safely rescued and treated for her injuries after the standoff.

Aftermath: Arrests and Federal Charges

All three escapees were taken back into custody and now face additional federal charges, including kidnapping and escape, on top of their existing violent crime allegations. Charles was already facing murder and armed robbery charges; Minor and Yohannes were serving life terms for murder and other violent offenses.

DeKalb County officials have since reinforced the compromised section of the jail and are reviewing other potential vulnerabilities to prevent future incidents.
