The father of 21-year-old Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte arrived in Mexico on Friday to identify his daughter’s body, days after she was fatally stabbed in the city of Cuautla, Morelos. Mexican authorities have detained a suspect in connection with the killing, while prosecutors are investigating the case as femicide.
Tacoronte had traveled to Mexico as part of an international exchange program and had been studying at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos. Her death has prompted concern among students and officials in both Mexico and Spain.
Spanish Exchange Student Killed in Cuautla
Claudia Tacoronte died from stab wounds on September 12 in Cuautla, according to Mexican authorities. Investigators said the incident occurred after an apparent attempt to steal her cellphone.
Tacoronte had arrived in Mexico in August through an exchange arrangement with Spain’s University of Granada. She was attending an event at a cultural facility in Cuautla when she was attacked, according to the Morelos state prosecutor.
The case has drawn significant attention because of concerns over violence against women in the region. Authorities are treating the killing as a femicide, a legal classification used in Mexico for certain gender-related killings of women.
Suspect Detained as Investigation Continues
Authorities announced the arrest of a man identified as Francisco Javier “N.” on Thursday. Prosecutors said the suspect has a previous criminal record involving burglaries and had previously spent time in prison.
The Morelos state prosecutor’s office said it intends to seek the maximum available punishment for femicide, which officials said could reach 70 years in prison.
Spanish media reports have also indicated that the suspect confessed to the killing. The allegations remain part of the ongoing judicial process as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Tacoronte’s death.
The suspect was scheduled to appear before a judge as prosecutors moved forward with the case.
Concerns Over Student Safety in Morelos
Tacoronte’s death has generated anger and concern among students in Mexico and Spain, particularly over the safety of women studying in Morelos.
According to official figures cited by authorities, Morelos recorded 21 femicides between January and July 2026, while 380 were registered across Mexico during the same period.
Student protesters have also said that at least four female students from the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos have been killed in the state this year.
Following the incident, Spain’s Foreign Ministry advised citizens against non-essential travel to Morelos, citing security concerns including drug-related violence and kidnappings. The University of Granada has also canceled exchange placements for three students who were scheduled to study in Morelos during the next semester.
Tacoronte’s family is now dealing with the aftermath of her death as Mexican authorities continue the investigation and legal proceedings against the detained suspect.
