Two men were injured in separate stabbing attacks on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, leading to the arrest of a 51-year-old suspect who now faces multiple criminal charges. Authorities allege the attacks occurred within minutes of each other and left both victims hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police said the suspect, identified as Raul Morales, was taken into custody shortly after the incidents. Investigators are continuing to examine the motive behind the attacks while prosecutors move forward with the case.
Suspect Charged After Two Separate Attacks
According to investigators, the attacks happened on Thursday afternoon just a few blocks apart on the Upper West Side. The victims included a 50-year-old Jewish man and a 57-year-old Asian man.
Officials said the suspect allegedly shouted religious phrases during the assaults. Witness statements and evidence gathered during the investigation played a role in the charges filed against him.
The Jewish victim was reportedly attacked after leaving a nearby synagogue, while the second victim was allegedly stabbed from behind in a separate incident. Both men were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover.
Hate Crime Investigation Continues
The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and weapons-related offenses. Initially, hate crime charges were connected to only one of the attacks, though investigators continued reviewing evidence surrounding both incidents. Authorities are working with prosecutors as the legal process moves forward.
Law enforcement officials have not publicly explained the difference in the initial charging decisions but emphasized that the investigation remains active.
Community Leaders Condemn Violence
The attacks have drawn strong reactions from public officials and community organizations, who condemned violence targeting people based on religion or ethnicity.
Leaders representing both Jewish and Asian communities called for continued efforts to combat hate crimes and improve public safety across New York City. Officials also noted that while overall violent crime has declined in recent years, hate crime incidents remain a significant concern.
The suspect is expected to appear in court as prosecutors continue pursuing the case.
