One Dead, Another Seriously Hurt in San Jose Shooting
A fatal shooting near a popular World Cup fan gathering area in San Jose, California, has left one person dead and another fighting for their life. Authorities have confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
The shooting occurred late Sunday night in San Pedro Square, a well-known entertainment district that has been serving as a World Cup fan zone during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Emergency responders arrived quickly after reports of gunfire and found two victims at the scene.
Police Launch Homicide Investigation
According to San Jose police, one victim was pronounced dead at the location, while the second victim was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators immediately secured the area, closing several surrounding streets as officers gathered evidence and searched for information related to the shooting. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or announced any arrests.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Incident Did Not Occur During a Match Screening
Authorities confirmed that no World Cup match was being shown at the fan zone when the shooting took place. The day’s only tournament game had ended several hours earlier, meaning the incident was not connected to an active public viewing event.
San Pedro Square has hosted large crowds throughout the tournament, offering fans a place to watch matches and enjoy entertainment. Despite the tragic incident, officials have not indicated that the shooting was directly related to World Cup activities.
