San Diego Mosque Attack Shocks California Community
A deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego has left the local Muslim community grieving after three men were killed during an armed attack that authorities are investigating as a suspected hate crime.
The incident happened Monday evening at the mosque complex in San Diego, California, where worshippers and children were present during community activities. Police said two teenage suspects arrived heavily armed before opening fire outside the center. Both suspects were later found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Investigators believe the attack was motivated by extremist ideology after discovering hateful writings, weapons, and tactical gear connected to the suspects.
Security Guard Credited With Saving Lives
Among those killed was 51-year-old security guard Amin Abdullah, who witnesses say acted quickly to protect worshippers and children inside the mosque complex.
Authorities said Abdullah confronted the attackers and helped trigger an emergency lockdown, giving families and students time to hide safely. Community leaders described him as a hero whose actions likely prevented a far greater tragedy.
Two other victims, identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, also reportedly attempted to stop the attackers during the chaos. Friends and relatives remembered all three men as respected and devoted members of the local Muslim community.
Officials confirmed that around 140 children were inside the facility at the time of the shooting, but no children were physically injured.
Witnesses Describe Panic and Fear
Witnesses recalled terrifying scenes as gunfire erupted near the mosque entrance. Several children and families sheltered inside classrooms and storage areas while police responded to the emergency.
A nine-year-old survivor described hearing repeated gunshots before officers escorted children out of the building. Residents nearby also reported hearing dozens of shots as law enforcement secured the area.
The attack has renewed concerns about rising anti-Muslim hate and violence in the United States. Community leaders called for unity and stronger protections for places of worship following the tragedy.
Investigation Continues Into Motive
Federal and local investigators are continuing to examine the suspects’ backgrounds, online activity, and writings recovered from their homes and vehicle.
Authorities said more than 30 firearms, tactical equipment, and extremist material were discovered during searches connected to the investigation. Officials believe the suspects may have been influenced by racist and anti-religious online content.
The FBI and San Diego police are asking the public to provide any additional information related to the attack as the investigation moves forward.
