Trump Announces Plan to Resurface Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in “American Flag Blue” ghb

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed a new renovation plan targeting one of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic landmarks—the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The proposal involves applying a modern, blue-toned surface to the pool’s base, a move Trump says will improve both its appearance and functionality. The announcement has sparked attention due to the site’s historical significance and the unconventional approach to restoration.

Plan to Transform Reflecting Pool With Blue Surface

Trump stated that the project will involve installing a durable, industrial-style coating over the existing stone bottom of the reflecting pool. He described the material as similar to those used in modern swimming pools and emphasized its long-lasting and efficient qualities.

According to the plan, the coating will be colored in a shade referred to as “American flag blue,” chosen to create a cleaner and more visually striking appearance. Trump explained that contractors advised against other colors, suggesting that the chosen tone would best suit the national landmark.

The renovation is already underway, with crews beginning preparatory work on the pool’s surface. Officials say the project could be completed quickly compared to traditional reconstruction methods.

Concerns Over Condition and Cost of Repairs

Trump criticized the current condition of the reflecting pool, describing it as poorly maintained and plagued by long-term structural issues. He pointed to problems such as leaks and deterioration, arguing that a full rebuild would take years and cost significantly more.

Instead, the proposed resurfacing is expected to cost around $1.5 million and be completed within a short timeframe. The approach is being framed as a cost-effective alternative to major reconstruction projects, which could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

The reflecting pool, originally built in the early 1920s, has undergone renovations in the past, including a major restoration completed in 2012.

Part of Broader Effort to Revamp Washington Landmarks

The reflecting pool project is part of a wider push to renovate and redesign key landmarks in Washington, D.C. Trump has repeatedly emphasized the importance of improving the capital’s appearance, especially ahead of upcoming national celebrations.

He has framed the effort as a modernization initiative aimed at restoring pride in historic sites while reducing maintenance challenges. Supporters highlight the faster completion timeline and lower costs, while critics question whether such changes are appropriate for a culturally significant landmark.

As work continues, the project is expected to remain a focal point in discussions about preservation, modernization, and the future of historic public spaces in the United States.
