Authorities in eastern France have charged a 43-year-old man after his nine-year-old son was rescued from a van where he had allegedly been confined for more than a year. The disturbing case, uncovered in the village of Hagenbach, has left the local community in shock and raised serious concerns about child welfare and unnoticed abuse.

Child Found in Critical Condition Inside Van

Police were alerted after a neighbor reported hearing what sounded like a child coming from a parked vehicle. When officers forced open the van, they discovered the boy in extremely poor condition—malnourished, unable to walk, and lying curled up among garbage and human waste.

Investigators said the child had been confined since late 2024 and had not bathed in months. He reportedly survived on limited food and water provided intermittently, while being forced to relieve himself in bottles and bags due to the lack of basic facilities.

Father Claims He Acted to ‘Protect’ His Son

During questioning, the father told authorities he kept the boy inside the vehicle to shield him from his partner, who he claimed wanted to place the child in psychiatric care. However, officials found no medical history supporting any such need.

The man now faces multiple charges, including unlawful confinement, neglect, and failure to provide proper food and medical care. He has been taken into custody while the investigation continues.

Partner Also Charged as Investigation Expands

The father’s partner, aged 37, has also been charged for failing to assist a child in danger and not reporting the abuse. She has denied knowing the boy was being held in the van, though authorities are examining whether others may have been aware.

Meanwhile, the child and his siblings have been placed under protective care as social services assess their situation. Neighbors expressed disbelief, saying they had been told the boy was no longer living in the area.
