Girl, 12, Fighting for Life After Being Shot in Head and Neck by Canadian School Shooter Who Murdered Nine
A 12-year-old girl is currently fighting for her life in critical condition after being shot in the head and neck during a mass shooting at a high school in British Columbia, Canada. The tragic incident, which took place on Tuesday in the remote village of Tumbler Ridge, has left nine people dead and more than 25 others injured, marking it as one of the deadliest acts of violence in the country’s history.
The young victim, who was airlifted to a major trauma center immediately following the attack, remains in intensive care. Medical officials have described her injuries as life-threatening. She was reportedly one of dozens of students and staff members targeted when a lone attacker opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the rampage began earlier in the day at a private residence in the community, where two individuals were found deceased. The shooter, identified by law enforcement as a female suspect, then proceeded to the local high school. Inside the educational facility, she killed seven more people before turning the weapon on herself. Police confirmed that the suspect was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The attack has devastated the small, close-knit community of Tumbler Ridge, located in the foothills of the Rockies. Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased, but reports indicate the victims include both students and school staff. In addition to the fatalities, two other victims were airlifted to hospitals with serious injuries, while approximately 25 others were treated for non-life-threatening wounds and shock at a local medical center.
This event stands as the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, surpassed only by the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal. The scale of the tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief and condemnation from across the nation and the world.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep shock and sorrow in a statement released shortly after the details emerged. “I share the sorrow of all Canadians whose lives have been irrevocably changed today,” Carney said, announcing that he would be postponing immediate international engagements to address the crisis at home. “We are grateful for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens.”
King Charles III, Canada’s head of state, also issued a message of condolence, stating that he and the Queen Consort were “profoundly shocked and saddened” by the “senseless act of brutal violence.”
As the investigation continues, police have secured both the school and the residence involved. Investigators are working to establish the motive behind the attack and the relationship between the shooter and the victims found at the residential location. The identities of the victims are expected to be released following the notification of next of kin, while the community of Tumbler Ridge enters a period of mourning for the lives lost and the young girl still battling for survival.
