ICE Urges Charlotte Officials to Turn Over Mexican National Found Naked After Allegedly Stabbing Ex-Girlfriend
Federal immigration authorities are publicly urging officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, to honor an immigration detainer lodged against a Mexican national accused of attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend in a local park.
Jamie Iram Gamez Cadena was arrested on February 1 following a violent incident at Julian Underwood Park in east Charlotte. According to police reports, Gamez Cadena met the victim at the park under the pretense of settling a financial debt. During the encounter, authorities allege he attacked the woman with a blade, delivering multiple strikes and slashing her repeatedly.
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot. Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department utilized fresh snowfall to track the suspect’s movements. Investigators followed footprints in the snow which led them first to the suspect’s discarded clothing, and eventually to Gamez Cadena himself, who was discovered hiding nearby in a naked state.
Gamez Cadena has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and is currently being held in Mecklenburg County custody.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Gamez Cadena is a Mexican national who originally entered the United States legally on a B-2 nonimmigrant tourist visa but violated the terms of his admission by overstaying his authorized period. ICE officials have lodged a detainer with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, requesting that local authorities notify ICE before releasing Gamez Cadena to ensure he can be taken into federal custody.
The case has reignited tensions regarding local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a strong statement regarding the arrest, criticizing policies that limit cooperation with ICE.
“Sanctuary politicians repeatedly place dangerous monsters like this above the safety of American citizens,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a press release. “We are calling on North Carolina politicians to commit to not releasing this attempted murderer from jail back into American communities.”
Federal officials cited a history of local jurisdictions in North Carolina refusing to honor ICE detainers, a practice federal agents argue endangers the public by releasing removable individuals charged with serious crimes back onto the streets. As of this report, Gamez Cadena remains in local custody pending further legal proceedings.
