Federal prosecutors announced this week that a third person has been formally charged in a foiled terrorism case in Michigan. The accused, a 19-year-old resident of Dearborn, is alleged to have joined two others in a conspiracy to provide material support to an extremist organization — and to obtain firearms for a planned attack.
Suspects, Charges and Alleged Plot
The newly indicted individual, a 19-year-old from Dearborn, has been charged in an amended complaint with conspiring to supply material support to an extremist group. He joins two other Dearborn-based suspects, who were previously charged with possession of firearms to be used in an act of terrorism.
According to prosecutors, the group planned violence in the United States, inspired by allegiance to the extremist organization. The three men are accused of securing weapons for use in a planned attack on behalf of that group.
Background: Broader Investigation and Arrests
The arrests are part of a wider crackdown this past month. On October 31, federal authorities detained five people in Michigan whom they say were inspired by a former military guard member charged earlier this year. That individual allegedly plotted a strike on a U.S. Army facility in Warren, Michigan. Additional arrests in New Jersey were also made, including one at Newark Liberty International Airport, tied to plans to travel abroad to join the extremist group.
Official Response and Law Enforcement Efforts
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney emphasised the commitment of federal law-enforcement agencies to preventing domestic terrorism, declaring that they will “follow the tentacles where they lead.” Local police in Dearborn — working in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Michigan State Police — confirmed that operations were underway in the city, though they said no immediate threat to the public was identified at the time of arrests.
