Odessa Triple Homicide: Teen in Custody

ODESSA, Texas — A devastating shooting in Odessa has left three family members dead and a community in shock after a 15-year-old boy allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend’s mother and her two children late Tuesday afternoon. Law enforcement officials say the incident occurred at a residential complex on the city’s north side, where officers found the victims inside an apartment just after 5:45 p.m. local time.

Planned Confrontation Turns Deadly

According to police reports, the juvenile suspect originally intended to confront his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend outside her school following a breakup. Somehow altering his plan, authorities say he instead went to her residence at the 87th Street Apartments and opened fire inside the unit. The victims included the girl’s 39-year-old mother and her two younger siblings — a 9-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl — all of whom were declared dead at the scene by first responders.

Law enforcement quickly located and detained the suspect approximately 40 minutes after the shooting. He has since been formally charged with capital murder involving multiple victims and is being held at a youth detention facility. Because of his age, police have not released his identity.

Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

Police Chief Mike Gerke described the attack as a “tragic and cowardly act of violence” and confirmed that there is no evidence of gang involvement or other broader criminal intent. The suspected shooter’s ex-girlfriend was not physically harmed in the incident, though officials noted the emotional impact on her well-being is a serious concern.

Investigators are actively tracing how the teen acquired the handgun believed to have been used in the attack. Meanwhile, local authorities and school officials have mobilized counseling resources to support students and families affected by the event.
