Los Angeles police say the investigation into the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez remains in limbo until the county medical examiner determines how she died, stressing that “it remains unclear whether there is any criminal culpability beyond the concealment of her body.”

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that the decomposed remains of Rivas Hernandez were discovered earlier this month inside the trunk of a black 2023 Tesla Model Y registered to platinum-selling musician D4vd. The vehicle had reportedly sat parked for “several weeks” on Bluebird Avenue in the Hollywood Hills before it was ticketed and towed on Sept. 5, consistent with earlier reporting by Rolling Stone.
Neighbors said the Tesla had been seen shifting between nearby streets since May, but had not moved for at least three weeks before authorities removed it. Tow lot staff later alerted police after noticing a foul odor and swarms of flies coming from the car, according to a search warrant affidavit.
The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division is leading the case but says progress hinges on the medical examiner’s findings. While online speculation has pointed to homicide, investigators note that overdose or suicide have not been ruled out.
“The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not yet determined the cause or manner of Ms. Rivas Hernandez’s death,” the LAPD statement read. “RHD is thoroughly examining every aspect of this case to uncover the truth and seek justice for Celeste Rivas Hernandez and her family.”
D4vd, whose real name is David Burke, was on tour out of state when news of the discovery broke on Sept. 8.
