A federal judge has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to a young man from Tennessee for his role in a violent carjacking last year. The case underscores law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to curb gun-related robbery and keep communities safe.

Armed Carjacking at Gunpoint

In the early hours of April 9, 2024, the 23-year-old defendant and a co-conspirator targeted a 2023 Toyota Camry in Memphis. The co-defendant brandished a gun at the victim sitting in the driver’s seat and ordered her out of the vehicle. The pair then fled — the driver in a different car, and the other on foot — triggering a federal investigation.

When authorities later apprehended the defendant, they discovered multiple firearms and a device capable of converting a weapon into an automatic firearm in his getaway vehicle. Prosecutors noted his prior criminal history, including multiple aggravated assault convictions, which classified him as a career offender under federal sentencing guidelines.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing Details

On August 25, 2025, the defendant pleaded guilty to charges of aiding and abetting armed carjacking and aiding and abetting use of a firearm during the robbery. His co-defendant had earlier entered a guilty plea and received a sentence of over nine years.

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented evidence from his time in custody that included assaulting another inmate and repeated unauthorized access to firearms — factors that contributed to the lengthy sentence.

Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local Memphis police collaborated in the investigation, which was prosecuted under a broader initiative targeting violent crime in the region.

Message to Violent Offenders

The severe sentence serves as a warning to those considering armed robberies: violent crime, especially involving firearms, carries strict federal penalties. Authorities reiterated their commitment to using available laws to prosecute offenders who pose a danger to public safety.

With this verdict, the justice system hopes to deter similar crimes and reinforce community security across Memphis and other vulnerable areas.
