Moscow, Russia — Russian security authorities announced the detention of a third suspect believed to be involved in last week’s attempt to assassinate Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, a senior figure in the country’s military intelligence structure. The move marks a significant escalation in the investigation into the brazen attack that wounded one of the Kremlin’s most prominent military leaders.
New Arrest in High-Profile Assassination Case
Federal Security Service (FSB) officials confirmed the latest arrest on Tuesday, identifying the individual as Pavel Vasin, a Russian national and the son of one of the previously detained suspects. According to authorities, Vasin played a supporting role in the plot by assisting with transport, surveillance gear, and reconnaissance related to the targeted attack.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly acknowledged buying equipment such as tracking devices and dashcams that were used to monitor Alekseyev’s movements prior to the shooting. Investigators say that the surveillance extended beyond Alekseyev to include other high-ranking military personnel, raising concerns about further planned acts of violence.
Background of the Assassination Attempt
The assassination attempt occurred on February 6, when Alekseyev was shot multiple times in the hallway of his Moscow apartment building. He was rushed to a hospital in serious condition and later regained consciousness. Earlier arrests in the case included a suspect apprehended abroad and extradited to Russia, along with another individual detained in Moscow.
Authorities have charged those in custody with crimes including attempted murder and unlawful possession of firearms. One additional suspect remains at large and is the subject of international search orders.
Ongoing Investigation and Wider Implications
Russian officials have linked the incident to foreign intelligence efforts, though specific external involvement has not been independently confirmed. The attack has stirred debate among international analysts regarding its motives and implications for global security, especially amid heightened tensions surrounding Russia’s military operations
