A grand jury in Bexar County has returned an indictment against 57-year-old Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, who now faces murder charges in the June 1 slaying of actor Jonathan Joss, 59, outside his former residence in San Antonio. The incident, which unfolded during an apparent argument, has brought fresh attention to earlier reports of threats and harassment experienced by Joss and his husband at the property.
Alleged Shooting, Arrest and Indictment
Court records indicate that during a confrontation outside the 200 block of Dorney Drive, the altercation escalated when Alvarez produced a firearm and shot Joss multiple times. Joss was found lying in the roadway and was later pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts. Alvarez was arrested shortly after the incident, booked for murder and assigned to the 437th District Court under Judge Joel Perez. A bond was set at $200,000, and Alvarez has since posted bail.
Victim Background and Prior Harassment Claims
Jonathan Joss, known for voicing “John Redcorn” in the animated series King of the Hill and acting in series such as Parks & Recreation and Tulsa King, and his husband reported multiple years of threats, harassment and homophobic slurs at their former home. A statement from Joss’s husband claimed the couple faced repeated intimidation, including the discovery of a deceased dog’s skull and harness placed in clear view.
Neighbourhood records show more than 70 complaints against Joss for alleged use of weapons such as pitchforks and tomahawks, as well as threats.
Defense, Local Impact and Next Steps
Alvarez’s attorney reports that his client maintains his innocence. Meanwhile, the shooting and preceding harassment have raised concerns about safety, response from authorities and tensions around Vila South Side community issues. As the case moves toward pre-trial proceedings, the indictment signals the formal commencement of a judicial process that could bring clarity and accountability for the fatal confrontation.
