An Inkster man has been taken into custody after Detroit-area law enforcement say he used counterfeit $100 bills to place orders at two pizza establishments, walked away with change, and never picked up the food. The incident has raised concern over increasing attempts to circulate fake banknotes in local businesses.
Suspected Counterfeit Scheme at Two Pizza Shops
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Javon Lavell Smith placed pizza orders on October 7 in both Milford and Highland Township. He allegedly handed over high-denomination counterfeit bills, received change, and left without retrieving the pizzas.
Investigators say the two restaurants became suspicious and launched an inquiry, which led to coordination with the sheriff’s office’s Fugitive Apprehension Team.
Arrest and Upcoming Legal Steps
Smith was arrested at his Inkster home earlier this week and arraigned on one count of uttering and publishing counterfeit notes. He was released on personal bond and is scheduled to appear for a probable-cause conference on November 19.
Authorities caution restaurant and retail owners to stay alert for counterfeit currency and to verify high-value banknotes carefully—especially if the customer departs without collecting their purchase.
