Britain’s Monarch Responds to Brother’s Arrest
King Charles III has publicly reacted to the arrest of his younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, stating that “the law must take its course” as authorities investigate allegations against the former royal. The monarch said he learned of the situation with “deepest concern” and emphasised that justice should be allowed to unfold through proper legal channels.
Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his royal titles last year, was taken into custody by Thames Valley Police on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Police have also executed search warrants at several of his properties.
⚖️ Full Cooperation and Rule of Law Highlighted
In an official statement, King Charles affirmed the royal household’s full cooperation with law enforcement and reiterated that the legal system should operate without interference. He urged that, as the matter proceeds, further comment from his side would be inappropriate out of respect for the process.
The king’s remarks underline the principle that no one, regardless of status, is exempt from scrutiny under British law. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy echoed this sentiment, saying that “nobody in this country is above the law” as the investigation continues.
📍 Ongoing Investigation and Broader Context
The arrest marks a significant moment in modern British history, as it involves a former senior member of the royal family being questioned over alleged conduct during his time as a UK trade envoy. The claims under investigation include allegations of sharing confidential information during official duties.
Mountbatten-Windsor, who celebrated his 66th birthday on the day of the arrest, has denied any wrongdoing related to these allegations. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether charges will be formally filed as the inquiry progresses.
