A jury in Hawaii has found anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter for violently assaulting his wife, Arielle Konig, during a hike in 2025. The high-profile case, which drew widespread attention, exposed disturbing details about their relationship, including allegations of infidelity, emotional distress, and a life-threatening confrontation on a cliffside trail.
⚖️ Jury Delivers Lesser Verdict
Prosecutors initially charged Konig with attempted murder, accusing him of trying to push his wife off a cliff, inject her with a substance, and strike her with a rock. However, jurors ultimately convicted him of the lesser charge of attempted manslaughter, concluding that he acted under extreme emotional disturbance rather than with clear intent to kill.
The conviction still carries serious consequences, with Konig facing up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is expected later in 2026.
🧗♀️ What Happened on the Trail
The incident occurred during a birthday hike on Oahu’s Pali Puka trail in March 2025. According to court testimony, Arielle described a terrifying struggle in which her husband allegedly tried to push her over a cliff and later hit her with a rock.
She also claimed he attempted to use a syringe during the attack, though the defense questioned whether such evidence existed. The assault was interrupted when nearby hikers heard her screams and stepped in, ultimately helping save her life.
🧠 Defense Claims Self-Defense
During the trial, Konig denied attempting to kill his wife and argued that he acted in self-defense, claiming she attacked him first. His legal team emphasized inconsistencies in the prosecution’s narrative and pointed to the lack of physical proof for some allegations.
However, testimony from the couple’s son proved damaging. He told the court that his father admitted during a video call that he had tried to kill his wife following accusations of an affair.
💔 Troubled Marriage Comes to Light
The trial revealed deep personal issues within the marriage. Prosecutors said the attack was fueled by anger over an alleged emotional affair, while Arielle described her husband as controlling and emotionally volatile.
Following the incident, she filed for divorce. The case has since become a stark example of how personal conflicts can escalate into extreme violence.
