Tragic Early Morning Ride-Share Shooting in Lawrenceville
A serious crime investigation is underway in Lawrenceville, Georgia, after a 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged as an adult in connection with the fatal shooting of a ride-share driver on January 1. Police say the teen allegedly shot the driver and left his body in the street before fleeing with the vehicle. Law enforcement officials are treating the case as a homicide and vehicle theft.
Alleged Carjacking Leads to Deadly Shooting
Authorities report that the victim, a 58-year-old man who was working early morning shifts to support his family, picked up the teenager through a ride-share service near Lilburn just before dawn. At a location on Groveland Parkway in Lawrenceville, the suspect is accused of exiting the back seat, shooting the driver from behind and abandoning his body on the road. Police later confirmed the victim’s SUV was stolen following the incident.
Law enforcement used traffic-camera footage and cooperation from the ride-share company to trace the stolen SUV back to the suspect’s neighborhood. Officers took the teen into custody without incident at a nearby residence.
Family Reaction, Investigation Continues
The community is reeling from the unexpected loss of the father of two, with friends and relatives describing him as a devoted parent and hardworking individual. Police believe the shooting was unprovoked and that the suspected motive was to steal the vehicle rather than any personal dispute between the teen and the driver.
Officials have confirmed the suspect’s ride-share account has been permanently disabled, and the company is assisting with the ongoing inquiry. Investigators continue to piece together the timeline and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
