Former Packers Assistant Ryan Mahaffey Selected to Succeed Jeff Stoutland as Eagles Run Game Coordinator
The Philadelphia Eagles have moved quickly to fill the void left by legendary offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, hiring former Green Bay Packers assistant Ryan Mahaffey as the team’s new run game coordinator and tight ends coach. This hiring comes less than 24 hours after Stoutland announced his departure from the organization after 13 seasons, marking a significant shift for the franchise’s offensive coaching staff under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
Mahaffey, 38, arrives in Philadelphia with a diverse coaching resume developed primarily under Matt LaFleur in Green Bay. Most recently serving as the Packers’ wide receivers coach (2024-2025), Mahaffey previously worked as the assistant offensive line coach (2022-2023) and an offensive quality control coach (2021). His connection to Mannion, who served as the Packers’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator before joining the Eagles, appears to be a driving factor in the recruitment. Before entering the NFL, Mahaffey served as the offensive coordinator at Northern Iowa.
The transition represents a massive structural change for the Eagles, as Stoutland was widely considered one of the premier assistants in the NFL. During his tenure, known affectionately as “Stoutland University,” the Eagles consistently fielded top-tier offensive lines and a dominant run game, contributing to two Super Bowl appearances and a victory in Super Bowl LII. Stoutland’s exit follows reports that he may have been stripped of run game coordinator duties during the 2025 season amidst offensive struggles.
Despite the swift hiring, immediate questions surround Mahaffey’s ability to maintain the high standard set by his predecessor. While Mahaffey has experience with offensive lines, his most recent focus has been on perimeter players, and he lacks the decades of specialized trench experience that Stoutland provided. Furthermore, stepping into a role previously occupied by a coach with near-mythical status in Philadelphia presents a unique pressure, particularly as the Eagles look to revitalize an offense that underperformed in the previous season.
