Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Senior, Injures Another Teen

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A deadly shooting in Birmingham on January 10 claimed the life of 18-year-old Pleasant Grove High School senior Brandon Campbell and left his 17-year-old friend critically wounded, authorities confirmed. Birmingham police say five suspects have now been arrested in connection with the violent attack.

The pair were inside a vehicle on Tuscaloosa Avenue Southwest late that Saturday night when gunfire erupted. Despite sustaining multiple wounds, Campbell attempted to drive away but lost control and collided with a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his friend was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Five Suspects Face Murder and Attempted Murder Charges

Police have taken five individuals into custody in connection with the shooting. Among those arrested are 27-year-old Algie Surrell Jr., 19-year-old Kavari Wells, 22-year-old Ricco Wells, and two 17-year-old juveniles. Charges include capital murder, attempted murder, and felony murder.

Investigators believe the victims may have been lured to the location as part of a setup tied to a planned robbery, though authorities have not publicly disclosed a confirmed motive. All suspects are being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

Community Honors Victim and Calls for Awareness

In the wake of the shooting, the Pleasant Grove High School community held a memorial balloon release to celebrate Campbell’s life. Friends, family members, and school staff shared emotional tributes, remembering him as a vibrant young man.

The injured teen’s father also spoke publicly, emphasizing his son’s character and dispelling any notion that either victim was involved in gang activity. He urged heightened public awareness around youth gun violence and safer environments for students.
