Fifth Teen Arrested in Brutal January Ambush Killing in Austin 6ddd93c8 384d 4381 9e30 bc61723d8a42 NAustinhomicide2

Young Suspect Arrested After Fatal Robbery-Turned-Ambush

Authorities in Austin have arrested 17-year-old Samuel Ray Johnson III as the fifth suspect connected to a deadly ambush shooting that took place January 24. The attack left 19-year-old Victor Ekozeme dead and 18-year-old Bill Nyanway wounded. Investigators describe the incident as a planned gun-robbery that escalated into a violent ambush outside the apartment complex.

Video surveillance, deleted messages, phone records, and statements from one of the suspects helped link Johnson to the grey SUV used in the crime. According to the arrest affidavit, the group shadowed the victims’ vehicle, then opened fire as they attempted to flee.

How the Ambush Unfolded

Ekozeme and Nyanway arrived at the complex in a white sedan, reportedly to exchange a gun. Shortly afterward, a grey Buick Enclave followed them inside and maneuvered near the victims’ car. Within moments, multiple suspects opened fire. Ekozeme was struck and later crashed into a fence before dying, while Nyanway was hit in the hand and fled on foot. Ballistic analysis revealed that at least three firearms were used in the coordinated attack.

Johnson was formally charged with murder, with his bond set at US$100,000. Investigators say he admitted being in the Enclave at the time and identified key roles of co-defendants — including the alleged shooter Jose Rojas Jr. and driver Tid is “Blue” Collier.

Wider Arrests, Charges and Ongoing Investigation

This is not the first arrest in the case. Police had earlier detained several individuals, including relatives of the suspect, and recovered multiple firearms. In addition to the murder charge, Nyanway also faces charges related to attempted robbery and tampering with evidence. Detectives emphasize the premeditated nature of the crime — stating it was rooted in a robbery plan that escalated when the victims tried to escape.

Law enforcement continues to search for any additional accomplices and urges anyone with information — photos, videos, or messages — to come forward.Young Suspect Arrested After Fatal Robbery-Turned-Ambush
