A senior FBI agent has stepped down following a controversial effort to scrutinize the actions of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who fatally shot a Minneapolis woman earlier this month. The resignation highlights internal tensions within federal law enforcement over how the case should be classified and pursued.

Resignation Linked to Minneapolis Shooting Inquiry

Tracee Mergen, a supervisory agent with the FBI’s Minneapolis office, resigned amid reported pressure from federal leadership regarding the direction of the investigation into the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE officer. Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, was killed in Minneapolis under circumstances that have drawn intense public scrutiny.

According to sources, Mergen initially sought to pursue a civil rights investigation into the ICE officer’s conduct. However, she was reportedly urged to reclassify the probe away from potential civil rights violations to an assault-on-officer investigation, prompting her departure.

Federal Investigation and Conflicting Priorities

The dispute over investigative direction has underscored broader conflict within federal agencies. Some prosecutors and law enforcement officials had reportedly wanted to rigorously examine whether the use of force by the ICE officer was justified. Others, including Justice Department leadership, resisted classifying the incident as a civil rights case.

Mergen’s unit had also been involved in other sensitive inquiries, including civil rights and public corruption matters, making the handling of the Good case particularly contentious within the bureau.

Public Reaction and Continued Scrutiny

The shooting and subsequent investigative fallout continue to draw national attention. Local protests and calls for accountability have intensified as details of the case and the federal response emerge. Authorities have confirmed the FBI is still looking into the incident, but have not commented on personnel changes or internal pressures.

Critics argue the resignation highlights concerns about federal oversight and transparency in cases involving law enforcement use of force, especially when agency jurisdiction overlaps. Supporters of the agent’s actions have praised her for maintaining investigative integrity under pressure.
