MINT HILL, N.C. — A routine child custody exchange spiraled into violence Friday morning when a man opened fire on responding police officers at a shopping center near Charlotte, authorities confirmed. The suspect was fatally shot, and two Mint Hill police officers were injured in the ensuing gunfight.

Police Response and Shooting Details

Shortly before 11 a.m., Mint Hill officers were dispatched to a custody exchange at an Edible Arrangements location on Matthews-Mint Hill Road. When officers arrived, the individual involved in the exchange produced a firearm and began shooting, prompting officers to return fire.

Law enforcement said the suspect was struck during the exchange of gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured officers were transported to a local hospital. Police initially listed their conditions as critical, but later updates indicated both are now in stable condition.

Community Reaction and Investigation Underway

Witnesses from nearby businesses described a chaotic scene, with one employee noting officers exiting the store visibly wounded. The Mint Hill Police Department has called in the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to support the ongoing inquiry into what led to the violent confrontation.
