CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87, Leaving Lasting Legacy in Global Media aaa 55

Ted Turner, the outspoken media entrepreneur who founded CNN and revolutionized 24-hour television news, has died at the age of 87. Turner passed away surrounded by family, according to statements released by Turner Enterprises. Widely known for reshaping modern broadcasting, Turner built a media empire that included CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network, and major sports franchises. His death marks the end of one of the most influential careers in television history.

Ted Turner Changed Television News Forever

Turner transformed the media industry in 1980 when he launched CNN, the world’s first 24-hour cable news network. At a time when many doubted audiences would watch news around the clock, CNN became a global force covering historic events including the Gulf War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and major international crises. Turner also pioneered the “superstation” concept through WTBS, helping expand cable television nationwide. Industry leaders credited him with permanently changing how people consume breaking news and live television coverage.

Media Mogul Built Massive Business and Sports Empire

Beyond CNN, Turner created Turner Broadcasting System and launched networks including TNT, Turner Classic Movies, and Cartoon Network. He also owned the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the Atlanta Hawks basketball franchise, helping turn both into nationally recognized brands. In 1996, Turner sold his broadcasting empire to Time Warner in one of the biggest media deals of its era. Known for his bold personality and controversial remarks, Turner earned nicknames such as “Captain Outrageous” and “The Mouth of the South.”

Turner Remembered for Philanthropy and Environmental Work

Turner was also widely recognized for his philanthropy, environmental activism, and support for international cooperation. In 1998, he donated $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation, one of the largest charitable gifts ever made at the time. He later co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative and became one of the largest private landowners in the United States through his conservation-focused ranching operations. Turner publicly revealed in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder.
