Campus Safety Alarms Sound as Outsiders Fuel Violent Incidents at College Events

Across several U.S. college campuses, alarming spikes in shootings, fake-threat calls and violent intrusions by outsiders are raising serious safety concerns. In particular, Homecoming gatherings and athletic events are becoming targets for uninvited individuals whose presence disrupts student life, prompting institutions to reevaluate security protocols and partnerships with local law-enforcement.

Surge in Violence and Threats at Student Gatherings

In recent weeks, multiple historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have reported shootings near or on campus during major events. One weekend saw gunfire near a Washington, D.C. campus during a Homecoming celebration, with victims including a teenager and multiple adults. On a separate occasion, a fatal shooting occurred at another institution during its Homecoming festivities.
Meanwhile, fake emergency calls known as “swatting” — where authorities are misled into responding to bogus threats like bomb scares or active shooters — have disproportionately targeted these schools. A recent study found that over 50 of the 101 HBCU institutions experienced at least one such threat in the last three years, disrupting campus operations and prompting evacuations.

Outsiders, Not Students, Seen as Major Threat

Security analysts point out that the primary risk factor in these incidents is individuals who are neither students nor staff but who attend large campus events carrying weapons or instigating chaos. One former law-enforcement officer described these actors as “hell-bent on creating havoc” at celebratory gatherings. Because many of the offenders are external to the campus community, traditional student-focused interventions often fall short.
To combat this threat, experts recommend enhanced perimeter control at events, installation of metal-detectors or magnetometers, increased patrols by paired campus and municipal officers, and better intelligence-sharing between university security teams and local law-enforcement agencies.

Strengthening Security to Protect the Academic Experience

Recognising the impact of these safety threats on students’ sense of well-being and learning, many institutions have already begun boosting their security infrastructure. Improvements include installing additional video surveillance, employing more campus police officers, and forging deeper partnerships with city and federal law-enforcement.
Administrators emphasise that no student should attend a campus event in fear of violence. The aim now is to restore a safe student experience — enabling learners to focus on education and community rather than worrying about whether they’ll get home safely.
