Indonesian Court Sends Australian Citizen to Prison in Major Drug Verdict
DENPASAR, Indonesia — An Indonesian court on Thursday handed down a 12-year prison sentence to Australian national Lamar Aaron Ahchee, 43, after convicting him of smuggling a significant amount of cocaine into the popular tourist destination of Bali. In addition to the prison term, the judge also imposed a fine of 2 billion rupiah (roughly USD 119,000), underscoring the country’s strict stance on illegal drug offenses.
Ahchee, who was arrested in May near Kuta Beach, was found in possession of 1.7 kilograms of cocaine stashed in 206 small plastic packets, alongside a digital scale and a mobile phone. The discovery came after authorities tracked two suspicious packages sent from England to his rented residence.
Court Details: Why the Sentence Was Extended
During the sentencing, judges highlighted that the large drug quantity and potential harm to Bali’s community and tourism industry were key factors in imposing a harsher penalty than what prosecutors initially sought. While Indonesian prosecutors earlier recommended a nine-year term, the court determined that aggravating circumstances, including Ahchee’s lack of full cooperation and evasive behavior, justified a longer sentence.
Although Ahchee denied knowing the packages contained cocaine — claiming he was misled and manipulated by another individual — the court rejected these arguments and found him responsible for the narcotics offense.

Indonesia is known for some of the toughest drug laws in the world, with severe criminal penalties for trafficking, importing, or distributing illegal substances.
