Queensland Man Arrested at Airport After Alleged International Child Exploitation Plot
A 49-year-old man from Queensland was taken into custody upon landing in Sydney, accused of trying to pay individuals abroad to help him adopt children for the purpose of sexual abuse. Border security agents say they uncovered disturbing material and communications on his devices during a luggage search, leading to a series of serious charges.
Border Officers Intercept Arrival, Search Luggage
Customs and border protection officers at Sydney Airport stopped the Queensland man after he arrived on an international flight. In the course of an intelligence-led search of his bags and electronics, authorities discovered what they allege were child abuse images and messages regarding procuring minors overseas for exploitative purposes.
Federal investigators claim the man had been in contact with intermediaries in the Philippines, offering roughly 30,000 Philippine pesos — about A$730 — in an effort to have children found for adoption, with the alleged intent of abusing them sexually.
Charges Filed; Bail Refused
Law enforcement agencies including the Australian Federal Police (AFP) charged the man with multiple offenses relating to child exploitation. These include possession and distribution of child abuse material, using communication services to plan sexual activity with minors, and attempting to procure a child for sexual activity abroad — a crime that can carry up to 20 years’ imprisonment if convicted.
A judge at the New South Wales court refused bail, citing the severity of the allegations. The suspect is scheduled to reappear in court in late April as the investigation continues. Authorities say they are working with international partners to determine whether additional victims are involved and to analyze digital and financial evidence recovered in the case.
