Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned house last month. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Friday that Jarques Ratliff had been taken into custody in the case. Officers had obtained arrest and search warrants after the medical examiner’s office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide on Thursday evening.
Police arrested Ratliff after encountering him walking along a city street. Authorities said the 51-year-old knew Fortune, but the nature of their relationship has not been disclosed.
The case remains under investigation, and police have indicated that further arrests may follow.

Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson. The circumstances of her death have drawn widespread attention, particularly because of Mississippi’s history of racial violence and lynchings.
Police Chief Brackney acknowledged the public concern surrounding the case but stressed that investigators must rely on established evidence rather than speculation.
“We cannot speculate,” the chief said, emphasizing that public statements would be based on verified facts and the medical examiner’s findings.
Family Seeks Answers as Investigation Continues
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said she was overcome with emotion when police informed her of the arrest. She expressed gratitude for the development but said the family still has many unanswered questions.
Spivey said authorities had not explained the motive or whether DNA evidence played a role in identifying the suspect. She also said she did not know Ratliff personally and was trying to learn more about his connection to her daughter.
Fortune, who was the mother of four children, had been remembered by her family as someone trying to rebuild her life. Her death has left relatives seeking clarity about the events leading to her killing.
