Mississippi Man Arrested in Death of Tasia Fortune as Police Pursue Answers

Jackson, Mississippi — September 11, 2026: Authorities in Mississippi have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old woman whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in Jackson last month.

Police identified the suspect as Jarques Ratliff. The arrest follows a ruling by the state medical examiner that Fortune’s death was a homicide, allowing investigators to move forward with warrants already secured in the case.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the development Friday, saying the investigation remains active and that additional arrests could follow.

Police Arrest Suspect After Homicide Determination

According to authorities, investigators had obtained search warrants and an arrest warrant for Ratliff. Officers later encountered him walking along a Jackson street and took him into custody.

Brackney said Ratliff had an association with Fortune but declined to provide further details about their relationship. Police have also not disclosed a motive.

The medical examiner’s determination on Thursday evening was a significant step in the investigation. The ruling allowed officers to execute the warrants they had obtained.

“This case remains active,” Brackney said, emphasizing that the arrest does not bring the investigation to an end.

Tasia Fortune’s Death Draws National Attention

Fortune was found dead on August 3 in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson. The circumstances surrounding her death have drawn widespread attention, particularly because of Mississippi’s history of racial violence and lynching.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said police informed her of the arrest Friday. She expressed gratitude for the development but said the family continues to struggle with unanswered questions.

Spivey said authorities had not told her the motive or whether DNA evidence played a role in identifying Ratliff.

“We still don’t have a lot of answers,” she said.

Fortune was a mother of four. Her family has continued to seek information about what happened to her and why.

Investigation Continues as Family Awaits More Answers

Jackson police said investigators interviewed nearly 15 people, collected forensic evidence and followed leads before the arrest. Chief Brackney urged the public to remain patient while detectives continue their work.

The case has also raised questions because Fortune’s death occurred less than a year after two other people were found hanging from trees in Mississippi. Those deaths were ruled suicides by authorities, while Fortune’s death has officially been classified as a homicide.

Police have not released additional details about the evidence against Ratliff or the circumstances leading to Fortune’s death. It was not immediately clear whether Ratliff had an attorney.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests remain possible.
