Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has secured a major victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, marking its strongest performance in the eastern German state and putting it closer than ever to leading a regional government. Led by candidate Ulrich Siegmund, the party won about 44% of the vote, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a sharp decline.

AfD Emerges as the Strongest Political Force

Preliminary results put the AfD at around 43.8% of the vote, more than double its performance in the previous state election. The CDU finished a distant second with about 17.2%.

Despite its strong showing, the AfD did not secure enough seats to control the 83-member state parliament on its own. It was projected to hold 39 seats, three fewer than the 42 required for an absolute majority.

Siegmund celebrated the result as a historic moment for the party and argued that voters had delivered a clear demand for political change.

The result is particularly significant because the AfD has never previously led a state government in Germany.

Coalition Talks Could Become Difficult

The election has created a complicated political situation in Saxony-Anhalt. Germany’s established parties have maintained a policy of refusing cooperation with the AfD, making it difficult for the party to turn its electoral success into government leadership.

Without AfD participation, other parties would need to find a workable combination capable of securing a parliamentary majority. Such negotiations could prove difficult because of the differences between the parties.

The outcome also represents a serious setback for Merz and the CDU. The result reflects growing dissatisfaction among voters over the national government’s handling of economic difficulties, immigration and other domestic concerns.

What the Result Means for German Politics

The Saxony-Anhalt election is being closely watched beyond the state because of the AfD’s growing influence across Germany. The party has campaigned heavily on immigration restrictions, national identity and changes to Germany’s approach to Russia and European policy.

The result could increase pressure on Germany’s mainstream political parties as they prepare for future elections. It also raises questions about whether the AfD can translate its growing electoral support into governing power.

For now, the party has achieved a major breakthrough but still faces the challenge of finding a path to government. The political negotiations that follow will determine whether its historic election victory leads to direct control of Saxony-Anhalt.
