A married couple and their young child were found dead inside a burning home in Maywood, Los Angeles, early Saturday morning, Sept. 5. Authorities said all three victims had apparent gunshot wounds, and investigators are treating the case as a possible domestic violence incident.
Firefighters Discover Three Victims Inside Home
Emergency crews were called to the residence after a structure fire was reported at approximately 2:30 a.m. Once firefighters brought the blaze under control, investigators searched the property for anyone who might still be inside.
Three people were discovered unresponsive in a bedroom. Authorities identified the victims only as a man and woman believed to be in their late 40s and a male child younger than 10.
All three had apparent gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not yet been released publicly.
Investigators said the fire appeared to have started on the home’s first floor before crews arrived.
Sheriff’s Department Investigates Possible Domestic Violence
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the circumstances surrounding the deaths appeared to be related to domestic violence. A firearm was also recovered from the property.
Investigators are examining whether the father may have been responsible for the shooting, although the investigation remains ongoing and authorities have not released a final determination about what happened inside the home.
Officials have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or detailed the events that preceded the shooting and fire.
No Ongoing Threat to the Public
Authorities have said there is no continuing danger to people living in the surrounding Maywood neighborhood.
The tragedy has nevertheless raised concern in the local community, particularly because a childcare facility is located next to the home. Residents expressed sadness over the deaths and concern about what could have happened if the fire had spread to nearby properties.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and determine the circumstances that led to the deaths.
