Ohio Governor Candidate Amy Acton Targeted in Armed Attack at Canfield Fair

Ohio Governor Candidate Amy Acton Targeted in Armed Attack at Canfield Fair JfJy6utl

Ohio Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton was unharmed Sunday after an armed man allegedly pushed through a crowd and moved toward her during a campaign appearance at the Canfield Fair near Youngstown. Several people were injured in the incident, while law enforcement quickly intervened and arrested the suspect.

The incident occurred as Acton campaigns for governor ahead of the November election and faces Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy.

Suspect Arrested After Moving Toward Acton

According to authorities, 38-year-old Patrick Havas was arrested after allegedly forcing his way through people at the fair while heading toward Acton.

Officials said Havas was carrying weapons when he was stopped. Authorities reported that he had two pistols and a Taser, while investigators also recovered brass knuckles following the arrest.

Several people were knocked down during the incident. Havas was taken to the Mahoning County Jail and faces charges including disorderly conduct and two counts of assault.

Acton and her husband were not injured.

Campaign and Political Leaders Condemn Violence

Acton’s campaign said she was grateful for the rapid response from law enforcement and expressed concern for those who were hurt.

The campaign also condemned political violence, saying such behavior has no place in Ohio.

Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign also denounced the incident, emphasizing that political candidates should be able to meet voters without facing threats or violence.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican who is barred by term limits from seeking another term, also condemned the confrontation and said violence or threats at political and public events are unacceptable.

Ohio Governor Race Continues Amid Security Concerns

The confrontation comes during a closely watched Ohio gubernatorial campaign. Acton, a former Ohio Department of Health director, is running as the Democratic nominee against Ramaswamy in the November general election.

Acton became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Ohio’s top public health official. Her public profile has remained significant as she campaigns for the state’s highest elected office.

The Canfield Fair incident is likely to intensify attention on security at political events as candidates continue traveling across Ohio and meeting directly with voters ahead of Election Day.
