Tupac Shakur Murder Trial Begins Nearly 30 Years After Rapper’s Death uSS3VMuCSpmLp9DFII 9MKbdNW0myhxvFPURXSS 6lUESq1doDQxzdbO

LAS VEGAS — Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas, the long-awaited murder trial connected to the hip-hop icon’s death has begun. Opening statements were presented Monday in the case against Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader accused of helping organize the drive-by attack that killed the rapper.

Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Prosecutors allege that he played a central role in planning the shooting after an earlier confrontation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s group.

Prosecutors Say Davis Helped Organize the Attack

The prosecution’s case focuses on the events of Sept. 7, 1996, when Shakur was riding in a BMW with Marion “Suge” Knight following a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas.

Authorities allege that Davis was among four men inside a white Cadillac that pulled alongside Shakur’s vehicle before gunfire erupted. Shakur was struck several times and died six days later at the age of 25.

Investigators believe the shooting was connected to a fight earlier that night involving Anderson, Davis’ nephew, and members of Shakur’s entourage. Prosecutors contend Davis helped arrange the retaliation and provided the firearm used in the attack.

Davis is not accused of personally firing the fatal shots. However, prosecutors are relying on Nevada law that can hold someone responsible for murder when they participate in planning or carrying out a killing.

Davis’ Public Statements Become Key Evidence

One of the most significant elements of the case is Davis’ own history of discussing the shooting publicly.

The investigation gained renewed momentum after Davis made statements about the killing in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Authorities say those accounts helped investigators establish a clearer picture of what happened and eventually led to his arrest in 2023.

Davis’ defense has challenged the reliability of those statements, arguing that some of his accounts were exaggerated or presented for entertainment and financial purposes. The defense also disputes the prosecution’s interpretation of his alleged involvement.

Trial Could Last Several Weeks

A 16-member jury, including four alternates, has been selected to hear the case. Prosecutors are expected to call dozens of witnesses during a trial that could continue for roughly four to six weeks.

Among the people who could become part of the proceedings is Knight, who was with Shakur during the shooting and survived. Other witnesses are expected to include people connected to the events surrounding the shooting and the subsequent investigation.

The case marks the first time someone has formally gone to trial for the killing of Tupac Shakur, one of the most influential and enduring figures in hip-hop. For years, his death remained one of music’s most prominent unsolved mysteries.

If convicted, Davis could face life in prison. For Shakur’s family, supporters and millions of fans, the trial represents a long-awaited opportunity for a courtroom to examine the events surrounding the rapper’s death and determine Davis’ responsibility.
