Authorities File Charges Over Threats in Nolan Wells Case

Federal authorities have charged at least two individuals accused of making threats against public officials involved in the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a Mississippi college freshman whose case has drawn nationwide attention.

Wells, a Black student-athlete, was found dead after disappearing during a July 4 boat trip to Horn Island with three white friends. Officials have not determined the cause of his death, and the investigation remains active. As public interest has grown, authorities say the case has also triggered harassment, online misinformation, and threats aimed at people connected to the investigation.

Bomb Threats and Violent Messages Lead to Criminal Charges

According to investigators, Michelle Francine Edwards of Ohio allegedly made bomb threats targeting Mississippi government offices, causing officials to respond to the reported threats and temporarily increase security measures.

In a separate case, Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce of California is accused of sending violent messages to a Mississippi judge whose son was among the young men present during the Horn Island outing. Prosecutors allege the messages included graphic threats and targeted the judge and her family.

Federal authorities say the criminal cases focus only on the alleged threats and are separate from the ongoing investigation into Wells’ death.

Investigation Into Nolan Wells’ Death Continues

The circumstances surrounding Nolan Wells’ death remain under investigation. The official cause of death has not yet been released, and state authorities are expected to present the case to a grand jury after the investigation is completed.

Wells’ family has also commissioned an independent autopsy. Their legal representatives continue to call for a thorough and transparent investigation, while civil rights leaders have urged officials to fully examine all available evidence.

Meanwhile, authorities have warned that false information circulating online has fueled public speculation and contributed to threats against officials, witnesses, and others connected to the case.

Officials continue to encourage the public to allow the investigation to proceed while avoiding the spread of unverified claims.
