Honduras Ex-President Juan Orlando Hernández Returns Home After U.S. Pardon, Faces Fresh Legal Battle Q0Kau9thsS38JxnWqNS7WTNUxij2mN4Yz54J P65DcXXpTTfbpzHUXzmIg3 EO5Ch 0Nn WsELBwNcbslw6x07l7mdg52d5xNBrC6F1v0XVaZ uCNMkv Qy IIMwxaRMSsWy2OwtylQmUVFUg3NjT25B877QHByh2W37HJO4GL K9LcalXUm6xCcrP MZSZB

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández has returned to Honduras after being released from a U.S. prison following a presidential pardon that ended his 45-year sentence. His arrival marks a significant political moment in the country, but his legal challenges are far from over as he prepares to face corruption-related charges in his homeland.

Hernández Receives Supporters’ Welcome After Return

Hernández, who served as Honduras’ president from 2014 to 2022, landed at Palmerola International Airport and was greeted by family members, supporters, and members of the National Party. His return comes months after a U.S. pardon secured his release from prison, where he had been serving a sentence related to drug trafficking and weapons offenses.

Speaking after his arrival, Hernández expressed happiness about returning to his country and reuniting with loved ones. While he acknowledged public discussion about his political future, he indicated that making a political comeback is not his immediate priority.

Corruption Charges Still Await Him in Honduras

Although the U.S. pardon cleared his American conviction, Hernández continues to face legal proceedings in Honduras. Prosecutors have accused him of fraud and money laundering in connection with the Pandora II corruption investigation, which involves the alleged misuse of millions of dollars in public funds between 2010 and 2013.

A court hearing has been scheduled for August 3. Earlier this year, Honduran authorities suspended an arrest warrant against him, allowing him to return without being detained upon arrival. Hernández has maintained his innocence and plans to seek dismissal of the domestic charges, arguing that they lack legal merit.

Return Sparks Political Debate

Hernández’s return has reignited political debate across Honduras. Supporters view his homecoming as an opportunity for him to defend himself through the country’s legal system, while critics argue that his return raises concerns about accountability and political influence.

The former president’s arrival also comes during a politically sensitive period following recent elections, adding further attention to the ongoing legal proceedings and the broader national political landscape.
